Visualize your hard drive with SpaceSniffer

SpaceSniffer is a tool application that gives you an idea of how folders and files are structured on your disks. By using a Treemap visualization layout, you have immediate perception of where big folders and files are situated on your devices. Treemap concept was invented by Prof. Ben Shneiderman, who kindly permitted the use of his concept into this tool.

Start a scan process and see the overall situation. Bigger are the elements on the view, bigger are folders and files on your disk. You need more detail on a big folder? Just single click on it. The selected element will be detailed with its content.

Need more and more detail? Keep selecting elements and they'll discover their secrets to you. Need a larger view of a small folder? Then double click on it, and it'll zoom to the full extent of the view.

If you need to understand why no more free space is left on the media, keep following bigger elements. Maybe you want to focus only on particular file types... ok. Just type the file type on the filter field (example: *.jpg) and press enter. The view will react and show you only JPEG files.

Want to know if you have old files? Type the condition in the filter field (example: >2years) and the view will react accordingly.

You can also filter on file size, file date and combine all filters (example: *.jpg;>1mb;<3months)

HDD Space Visualization

OverDisk is a disk usage browser. It can be used to quickly find out how a partition's space is distributed among the file system hierarchy.

I've currently stopped working on it, due to a bug in the libraries of the original developing environment. However, I intend to move the project into another suite and incorporate more features from some other utilities I have. So, stay tuned... final version coming Real Soon Now™ ;)

In the meantime, you can download an alpha version, complete with installer/uninstaller and (slightly out-of-date) documentation. Note that this is pre-release software and represents work in progress. Nevertheless, I've been using it for quite some time now and the only problem is that it occasionally crashes after several refreshes. No serious system implications have been observed, especially on WinXP, which is a pretty robust OS! :)

Windows Auto ShutDown

Mortens ShutDown- is a tool to shut down a computer at a specific date and time. It is simple to use: Setup a time when your computer shall shut down and run the application. There are several shut down modes supported as there are a simple user log-off, or restart or shutdown or power off the computer. Running applications that would prevent the computer from shutting down can be automatically killed. You can setup -Mortens ShutDown- to warn you before it really shuts down the computer. Furthermore you can abort the shut down procedure or change the time settings (remotely) during run by changing the INI-file.
In addition this tool can be used to control the launch of any application (from a remote computer) via an INI file. This allows e.g. the following:

Setup a folder from where -Mortens Shutdown- will poll an INI file and react on changes made in it. If you setup this folder as a network share, you can easily modify any setting (e.g. application to launch) remotely.

While -Mortens Shutdown- is running on the remote machine you can setup an application to launch within the INI file. Once you have set the "launch" flag in the INI file -Mortens Shutdown- will trigger the launch of the requested application (script) on the remote machine.
Of course such operations can be protected by a password. The result (output) of the application (script) can be written in a logging file which can be monitored remotely, too.

CDex - Open Source Digital Audio CD Extractor

Cdex is a free opensource tool that can extract the data from the audio cd and save the files in either wav or mp3 format. You can also rip the audio cd using Windows Media Player, but this tool has advanced features such as support for audio file tags, ability to add headers to mp3 files, and more encoding options.

First insert the cd in the drive and load this tool. You will find all songs listed, you can edit the Album name, Artist name, Genre, and Year.

Now to finally rip this audio cd, select all tracks by pressing Ctrl+A and then go to Convert and select whether you want to Extract CD to Wav format or to Compressed Audio Format(Mp3 format).

Symantec Registry Repair tool

Symantec Registry Repair is free tool for removing the unwanted registry entries that were added during the upgrade of Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1. FREE PDF to Word conversions

PDF to Word Free is a free web service that offers high-quality conversions of PDF files to DOC or RTF formats that can be used in Microsoft word or other Rich Text Editors. It lets you upload PDF files through a web interface and will then send the converted file via email as an attachment.

I have looked at a number of free PDF to DOC/RTF conversion options (see the previously published comparative test). I will say straight off the bat that this is the most impressive free conversion service that I have come across; their slogan "the most accurate PDF to Word converter", at least when it comes to free conversion services, is right on the money. I will qualify this statement a Freewaregenius 5-Star Picklittle but by saying that this is still in private beta and therefore it is hard to determine whether it will eventually suffer from some of the reliability and/or server overload issues that afflict some other similar services (such as Koolwire which I have recommended elsewhere).

Please note that the developers have generously offered to make private-beta invites available for Freewaregenius readers. Check the "registration" section at the bottom of this posting under "Compatibility" for the invite code.

I used this service to convert a number of documents that contain a number of elements: images, tables, hyperlinks, bullets, numbered-lists, and various text formatting. Here are more notes on this service (as well as results):

   * Max uploadable file size: is 10 megs. For larger files you might want to split these into manageable parts using something like PDF Split and Merge or PDFTK Builder.
   * Performance: very fast. The email with the converted file arrived in a manner of minutes. It would be interesting to see if this will change once the service is out of private beta and is handling a higher level of traffic and conversion requests.
   * Privacy policy: I am paraphrasing their privacy policy which can be found here. It promises that your files will not be looked at by a human at any point and that they will be deleted as soon as they are converted and emailed. Also promises that your email would be used solely to send your files and for no other reason.

Classic Menu in Office 2007

Recover deleted files

Avira UnErase is an efficient tool for recovering deleted files from your hard disk. If you have deleted an important document, photos or MP3s either by accidentally or as a result of virus infection, you can easily recover those from your hard disk. Avira UnErase Personal is a tiny (402Kb), free program and is very simple to use. Even though the program has no support from Avira now, it is still useful.

While checking it here, the program shows a better result, it is quite fast and recovered many of my deleted files very effectively. The program supports following file systems: FAT16, FAT32, NTFS4, and NTFS5 and can be installing on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Avira Unerase is completely clean; no bloatware or upgrade trap is there. Remember that, in order to prevent sectors being overwritten, you should save the recovered files on a different drive to the one from which they were initially deleted.
